PERFECT OPPORTUNITY TO STAY IN GROUNDS OF A ONCE MAGNIFICENT CHATEAU.
The chateau, now in ruins is set in grounds of 5000 m² and enjoys a unique setting of peace and tranquillity.
The chateau was built in the 12th century and underwent many modifications until the 14th century, and comprised a polygonal enclosure with circular flanking towers. There were six towers, arches and two chapels, one of which was dedicated to St. Anne. In one well, located in the centre of the castle there was a tunnel leading to the farm Goulet, which may have provided a route of escape for the Lords in case of problems.
Brief history of the area:
The chateau is 2 kms from village of Corseul, the home of an ancient Gallo-Roman town, capital of the Coriosolites who were a powerful Gallic tribe trading with the UK, and also maintained control of the Channel Islands. In the 12th century the chateau was owned by the noble family Montafilan-Dinan, who presided over the region, controlling the route from Avranches to Saint Brieuc. Today all that remains of this once magnificent chateau is part of the enclosure and two towers emerging from the vegetation that has gradually invaded.
However, long before that time and the era before Christ, this was a strategic location of what was then a diverse community that would go down in history. Corseul was chosen by the Romans in 50 BC, and for 400 years was their capital, centre of commerce and trade.
Over the years the Romans constructed villas, a forum, baths and temples, the most important being the “Temple of Mars” at Haut-Bécherel (1.7kms from Corseul), which was built in the late 1st century AD.
Sadly, over the years, the once magnificent Gallo-Roman city was stripped of its splendour, with stones from the city being used in parts of the ramparts of St. Malo, and in the 12th & 13th centuries other materials were used to build the chateau Montafilan.
